Summer Programs
Some summer programs are free but some do cost money. Here are a few that I have come across. They are organized by major/program. Check with your school counselor who will have others in your area.
Humanities
Bank of America internship: This program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and helps develop you as the next generation community leaders through two components:. A summer eight-week paid internship with a nonprofit organization selected by the bank. This internship is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by their Host Organization. You can apply for the program by going to www.bankofamerica.com/studentleaders. The deadline to apply is February
Medical Career Programs:
FILM Programs: Chapman University hosts a summer film academy for 2 weeks. Students stay in the dorms and obtain the college experience. The program is roughly about $3,000 but there are scholarships available. If you are interested, please find information here. Deadline in the spring.
4 week credit classes at USC: There are several classes you can take at USC for credit. These classes are not free but provide you with a great college experience. Courses range from Architecture, Business, Engineering & Information Technology, Global Studies, Journalism, Pre-Health & Science, Pre-Law Performing Arts, Summer Theatre Conservatory, Writing & Critical Thinking. Business:
The Teen Entrepreneur Academy is designed to Prepare Future Business Leaders. It's a One-week Residential Business Summer Camp Academy for High School Students. The program is not free but there are full scholarships available. This program provides with a real college experience. To learn more, click here. Deadline is June 1.
Leadership-Latino Students
The mission of the CLYLP is to enhance and further develop the leadership potential of California’s youth as they prepare to become the future leaders of our state and nation. The CLYLP seeks to fulfill its mission by accomplishing several objectives. For more information, click here.
Ready to Lead Program-Washington DC
Have you ever dreamed of visiting our nation’s capital and learning about how our government works? CHCI has an all-expense paid leadership experience designed just for Latino high school students. - The Eve& Gene black Summer Medical Career Program is for 11th and 12th graders. This program is a medical mentorship/internship. Students shadow various medical professionals. Deadline in February. For information, click here.
- Children's Hospital LA. Opportunity to observe medical professionals, participate in skills labs, gain exposure, etc. Students are responsible for their own transportation and scrubs. There is no fee to participate but students must adhere to rules on attendance. Program deadline in January. For more information, click here.
